I was a college instructor for many years, and I learned to use most of these techniques with my students. I used to start class with a centering moment, where they turned off phones and took a few minutes to tune into the space. I would often take my students outside for reflectivity and brainstorm sessions. Most of the classrooms I had to teach in had no windows, poor lighting, chalk boards, and stifled air flow making it feel as if we were doing work in a mortuary. Students were always tired and slow moving in that setting. I learned to take engagement activities outside. I was always intrigued by how improved these sessions were when they got out in the sun and fresh air. Students were always more energized and relaxed and in turn, their engagement with each other and their productivity was much more enriched. These techniques are easy to apply, but more often than not we fit ourselves into a box of what our leadership should look like based on outdated parameters, when elevating our impact is as simple as tuning in.
