I remember the day I walked out of my annual review, numb. They’d nominated me for Advisor of the Year, scored me high on end-of-semester reviews, and written me countless letters of thanks and praise.

Despite the transformative work I brought to the classroom, the countless hours mentoring students, and the bold ideas I pushed forward—the system was clear: I wasn’t enough.

That day, I closed my office door and cried, feeling the weight of all the ways my voice had been silenced. Time after time, I’d been reminded that leadership wasn’t about vision, transformation, or truth—it was about toeing the line to someone else’s trophy.

Moments like these are the crucible of liberation. Sometimes, that’s hard to see.

While that experience was demoralizing, it was also the catalyst that made me say, “Enough.” That moment propelled me into a higher purpose.
